What is it like to suddenly become trapped inside your own body? To hear your loved one's parting from you as if you were a guest at your own funeral? To come to terms with the fact that you are going to die, but then, just as suddenly, to come back to normal?
44 Hours centers around Gil’s telling of this harrowing story from his perspective, together with interviews with the people who surrounded his bed during those hours: intensive care crew, specialists, family, and friends — who confront, complete, and provide their various perspectives on the stories told by Gil. Animation brings Gil's thoughts and imagination to life as well as elements surrounding him in the intensive care unit, an additional cast of characters in Gil’s mind.
Gil’s story provides the world’s first living testimony of a case like this, leading to changes in medical ethics and protocol regarding teetering on the verge between life and death.
